Gia Barboza-Salerno's Research Featured by National Criminal Justice Association
CURA Faculty Affiliate, Gia Barboza-Salerno, recently had her work featured by the National Criminal Justice Association. Along with co-authors Sharefa Duhaney and Hexin Yang, Barboza-Salerno published "Spatial accessibility to gun violence exposure on walkable routes to and from school" in the journal SSM - Population Health. The paper analyzed exposure to gun violence along walkable street networks near schools in Englewood Chicago. Using acoustic-sensor data, the researchers detected 610 gunshots fired in Englewood during the 2021-2022 school year on days where schools were in session; this number was significantly higher than the number of gunshots officially recorded by police during official investigations. The researchers argue that the definition of school gun violence should expand to include witnessing and hearing gun violence and offer suggestions for changing current policing strategy.
