Urban data form the key evidence base for how cities are understood, planned and developed. These data can be parsed through urban informatics, displayed as dashboards to provide ‘evidential stories’ that inform public perception, guide investments, and shape policy. Yet, little critical attention has been paid to urban data and their lifecycles, circulation, politics and power, and their display and use through dashboards. This paper will provide a critical assessment urban data and dashboards, and examine how a data stories approach, drawing on research-creation and traditional social science methods, can on the one hand tell stories about urban data and dashboards, and on the other, how dashboards can be used to tell stories about cities.
Rob Kitchin is a professor in Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute and Department of Geography. His research mostly focuses on digital geographies and smart cities. He is the (co)author or (co)editor of 33 academic books and (co)author of over 200 articles and book chapters. He was founding and managing editor of Dialogues in Human Geography and Social and Cultural Geography, was an editor of Progress in Human Geography and co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Encyclopedia of Human Geography (1e). He was the 2013 recipient of the Royal Irish Academy’s Gold Medal for the Social Sciences.
