As a part of the sesquicentennial Ohio State open house event, the Sustainability Institute is hosting a presentation entitled Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Sustainability: Lessons Learned for the Future of Transportation moderated by Harvey Miller, Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis.
150 years ago, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed and the gas-fired internal combustion engine was developed. These innovations enabled unprecedented economic growth, but also led to massive environmental and social impacts.
Today, the transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and highways exacerbate inequality in America. We are in another transportation revolution enabled by new technologies, automation, connectivity and power systems. What are the lessons of the past that inform our future? How can technology enable a more sustainable transportation system for Ohio, the nation and the world? What unintended consequences will we see and how can we plan for them?
The speakers will include:
- Elena Irwin, Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics, Sustainability Institute Faculty Director
- Harvey Miller, Geography, Center for Urban and Regional Analysis Director, Sustainability Institute research co-lead, smart and resilient communities
- Bart Elmore, History, Sustainability Institute core faculty
- Jennifer Eaglin, History, Sustainability Institute core faculty
- Amber Woodburn McNair, City and Regional Planning
Join us at 1 p.m. in the 202 Mortar Board Centennial Suite of Thompson Library where leading faculty in environmental history, transportation engineering, geography and sustainability will tackle the questions that will shape the next 150 years.
