In this talk, Dr. Mark Partridge will cover the following:
• What are the typical circumstances that underlie the location of a data center?
• Do Data Centers create local jobs and are they a net fiscal plus for local governments?
• Do Data Centers have unintended consequences in terms of pollution, water usage, and electricity demands?
Mark Partridge is a Professor in AED-Economics at Ohio State University, where he served as Swank Chair of Rural-Urban Policy from 2006 to 2024. He also is a consultant with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He served 12 years as Editor of the Journal of Regional Science and is on several other academic journal editorial boards.He has published over 200 academic journal papers and 70 other book chapters, briefs, and reports, including some of the world’s leading economics journals such as American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Economic Geography, and Journal of Urban Economics. He co-authored the book The Geography of American Poverty: Is there a Role for Place-Based Policy? Dr. Partridge frequently gives presentations and addresses to academic and practitioner groups around the world. Dr. Partridge has consulted with OECD, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, and various governments in the U.S. and Canada, as well as with the European Commission. He has presented to the U.S. Congress and the Canadian Parliament on regional issues.
Dr. Partridge has received research funding from many sources including World Bank, European Commission, USDA, U.S. National Science Foundation, and Canadian SSHRC. He is one of the top rural policy experts. Dr. Partridge’s expertise also include economic effects of tax incentives and policy; regional economic growth such as for states, cities, and rural areas; effects of energy development; geography of poverty; and migration. He is a Fellow and Past-President of the Regional Science Association International, Past-President of North American Regional Science Association (NARSC), and received the prestigious NARSC Isard and Boyce Awards.
