1. 2006 Ohio Deed Transfer Data

black01_next.gif Obtaining Housing Data

In 2006, CURA bought a set of deed transfer data from First American Real Estate Solutions.  This transaction data covers 59 counties in Ohio, and dated from October 2004 to April 2006.  There are a total of 227,789 residential records for the 19-month time span.  The data has been geocoded by CURA.

From the 2006 deed transfer data, CURA has generated a set of matched buyer-seller names with their bought-sold house characteristic and mortgage information. It shows where persons sold and bought their properties.  This matching data set is the results of identifying the following criteria:

black01_next.gif Data Links

  • Residential use (single family, townhouse, condo, duplex, triplex and residential unspecified);
  • Persons who sold and bought only one residential property, not multiple transactions or flippers;
  • Who must be an individual home buyer/seller, not an institutional buyer/seller;

3. Property Transaction Data: 1985-1998 Original Deed Transfer Records*

These data sets cover 53 counties of Ohio, 4 counties of Michigan, and 3 counties in Kentucky.  There are two sets of data for each county.  One is the original deed transfer main record with detailed property characteristics. The other is called sale record, which is a short version of the previously mentioned record, primarily with the mortgage sale information for all kind of property class. Data includes full population, not just samples.  Both original file formats are in fixed length text file format (.txt and .sal extension).

(See Data Availability 1985 - 1998 Original Deed Transfer Records.)

* Data is not available for the public.

4. 1985-1998 Matched Buyer-Seller Data*

For each of 7 multi-county metropolitan areas in the state (Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Union, Madison, Pickaway) for each of the 14 years (1985 - 1998), we have matched home buyer-seller data sets (matched by names on the deeds transfers).  Cases are households who sold one home and bought another.  Detailed property characteristics including exact address for both the home bought and sold.  Total number of records are 54,965.  Original file is in SAS format.

* Data is not available for the public.

5. 1995 Housing Survey in Franklin County

For Franklin county for 1995 the matched buyer-seller data set contains 2420 cases.  A survey was sent to 1600 of those (all cases in the suburbs and a random sample of those in the central city).  Received 835 usable surveys in return.  Tests indicate that the survey returns without weighting represent the houses sold by geography and price class.  They slightly overrepresent higher priced homes in the home purchased categories.  The survey has been combined with the matched property data from the deed transfer records.  Original file is available in SAS format and has been geocoded by XY coordinates in State Plane 1983, Ohio South projection.  Shapefile is also available upon request.

(See Survey Research on Homeowner Satisfaction and Mobility Decision.)

6. 1998 Housing Survey for 7 County Region

For the 7 county central Ohio area for 1998 the matched buyer-seller data set was again surveyed.  All cases in the six suburban counties (Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Union, Madison, Pickaway) and all cases in the five inner suburbs of Franklin County (Bexley, Gahanna, Westerville, Worthington, and Upper Arlington) received a survey.  A random sample in the remainder of Franklin county was also surveyed.  We sent out a total of 4300 surveys and received approximately 2080 surveys (48% return).  The survey has been combined with part of the matched property data. (See Survey Research on Homeowner Satisfaction and Mobility Decision.)

8. 2001 Housing Survey for Franklin County

     (prior-Sept 11)

In late summer 2001, a mail survey of a random sample of 2600 homeowners in Franklin county, Ohio, the central county of the Columbus metropolitan area was conducted.  Samples were drawn from the auditor's records.  "Homeownership" is determined by land use codes, site and mortgage mailing addresses in those records.  The survey asked questions about housing/neighborhood satisfaction and desires, mobility and remodeling plans, and demographic characteristics of the household.  A subset of surveys contains conjoint questions asking people to select between housing options within a budget constraint. 1257 survey cases were returned (48% response rate).  Original file is in Excel format.

(See Survey Research on Homeowner Satisfaction and Mobility Decision.)

9. 2001 Housing Survey for Franklin County

     (post-Sept 11)

The post-September 11 survey was completed and mailed in November 2001 to a new random sample of 1,940 homeowners from the same geographic area in Franklin county, Ohio.  The final version of the collected data became available for analysis in February 2002 with a total of 803 returned surveys (41% response rate).  It not only has the similar questions as the prior one but also asking people's opinion about impact of Sept 11 attacks on their home ownership decisions in order to study the possible effects of the terrorist attack on people's views of their homes, neighborhoods, and communities in a geographic region that was not directly affected by the attacks on September 11th.  The goal of this follow-up survey was to gather data that would permit an examination of the possible differences between the answers given immediately before the attack and those within a month or two after the attack.  Analysis to date has included univariate comparisons between pre- and post- attack variables and multivariate analyses using discrete choice conjoint methods to analyze respondent's preferences for combinations of housing features.  This study looks at the immediate impact of the terrorist attacks on people's satisfaction and plans.
